Decision details

Re-opening the School System Following the Current Partial Closure in Relation to Covid-19

Decision Maker: Executive Member for Children's Services

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: No

Decision:

1)          That the proposals detailed in the report be approved.

2)          That this decision be deemed urgent and exempt from the 'call-in' process in order to agree the processes to be followed by schools to enable them to meet the government’s date for reopening of 1 June 2020 and to be able to communicate those arrangements to staff and parents ahead of the break for half term on 22 May 2020.

Reasons for the decision:

To seek approval of the proposed mechanism by which schools will be able to re-open in accordance with the Government direction and of the support being provided to schools in that regard.

Alternative options considered:

A range of options were considered including whether it was appropriate to open schools at this point in time. However, on the basis that there was a clear government direction in this regard and recognising that an assessment would need to be made in the case of each individual school, it was considered reasonable and appropriate to proceed on the basis of the recommendations set out in the report.
