Booth Road Area, Altrincham - Proposed Traffic Management Measures

Decision Maker: Corporate Director Place

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

As this predominantly residential area, north of the A56, is within walking distance of Altrincham town centre, concerns have been raised that it attracts all day parking by commuters. There are historic existing parking restrictions on Grey Road, Booth Road, Hartley Road and Wainwright Road.

However, Highgate Road and Gorsey Lane are also very busy cut through routes between the A56 and Oldfield Road, especially at peak times. The roads in the area are quite narrow therefore it is felt that further restrictions are needed in order to prevent double parking. This is particularly important as Highgate Road and Grey Road form part of a school bus route and Oldfield Road forms part of a local bus route.

It is also felt that additional junctions within the area will require junction protection markings in the form of double yellow lines. This is to protect access and visibility for all road users at the junctions. Therefore, it is proposed that several existing restrictions be extended, and some new restrictions introduced.

The proposed restrictions will improve access and visibility for all road users.

Decision:

1.      That, following careful consideration of the informal comments received, authorisation be given to advertise the intention to introduce the Traffic Regulation Order as detailed in the Schedules to the report and that, if no objections are maintained, the Order be made and implemented in part, as indicated in the report, as soon as is practicable.

2.      That any objections maintained be reported for consideration.

Reasons for the decision:

Parking problems in the Booth area of Altrincham, north of the A56, are evident relating to commuter parking for Altrincham town centre and parking relating to schools in the locality.

The proposal seeks to introduce various waiting restrictions across the area for residential amenity and safety and to ensure traffic can flow freely along these residential roads and to maintain access for essential service vehicles, including refuse vehicles.

Alternative options considered:

Residents were consulted on a set of proposals and changes made following that consultation. To do nothing would not resolve any of the congestion issues currently experienced.

Interests and Nature of Interests Declared:

None.
